Pet Store Given Six-Month Reprieve
Pet Store Given Six-Month Reprieve

After three hours of emotional testimony from supporters from both sides of the issue, the Fountain City Council granted Valley Pets another six months to continue selling dogs and cats during its Jan. 24 meeting.
Council temporarily grandfathered in the pet store under this ordinance provided there are no further validated complaints pertaining to dogs or cats filed with the Colorado Department of Agriculture against the pet store in the next six months. If there are any legitimate complaints the council will prohibit any further sales of dogs and cats. This puts the fate of the pet store in its owner’s hands.
City Attorney Al Ziegler said he would draft an amendment to the ordinance and bring it back for council’s review on February 14.
During public comment, Valley Pets owner David Neverette was the first to address council. He expressed his desire for his pet store to be grandfathered in and allowed to continue selling dogs and cats.
“I have been a licensed pet store in the City of Fountain for 30 years,” Neverette explained.” I would like to work with the City of Fountain and the state to resolve any issues that they have. As of today I am current on my license with no infractions or any problems that need to be addressed.”
