Fountain-Fort Carson Football Team Wins Season Opener

Fountain-Fort Carson Football Team Wins Season Opener

by Julie Jones

The Fountain-Fort Carson Trojans get their first win of their 60th anniversary season with a 20-17 defeat of the Fossil Ridge Sabrecats Saturday in Fort Collins.

Both teams struggled early in the first quarter, with punts ending the first three drives. The Trojans had a long drive at the end of the first, but they turned it over on downs at the Sabrecats' 14-yard line. The Trojans' defense stepped up and shut down the Sabrecats, helped by Morgan Fox's sack on third down to the Sabrecats' 10-yard line. The Trojans quickly took advantage of the field position and scored on their second play in the second quarter, with Trae Bankston going 29 yards for the Trojans' first score. Kevin Davis added the extra point and the Trojans led 7-0 with 9:44 left in the first half.

The Sabrecats answered with their own score, a 17-yard pass play, tying the score at seven with 6:26 left in the first half. The Trojans' next possession ended with an interception, and Sabrecats marched back down the field. They were stopped deep in Trojan territory, but were able to add a 22-yard field goal to go into halftime with 10-7 lead.

Fountain Valley became a settlement in 1859 (founded by pioneers Tom Owens and Amos and Mary T Terrell.) They were soon joined by a third family, Mathias and Barbara Lock. Also founded in 1859 were Colorado City, Denver, Golden and Central City. The locals established a charter in 1871 and incorporated in 1903.
