You Have Got To Take The Bad With The Good

Times are really feeling tense, right?

April 19, 2017

I don’t care whether you support our president or if you are not a fan of the man, things are scary right now. We hear on the news all of this stuff about the tension getting thick with North Korea. This does not help us rest well at night. We also dropped the MOAB (mother of all bombs) on Afghanistan and fired missiles at the airport in Syria where the planes flew from that dropped chemical bombs on its people. Just between you and I, I am a very early riser and I happened to see some unedited brutal footage of the effects of that bomb and honestly, I cried for a full hour, really hard. Visually it was so difficult to process. I can barely recall it without tearing up now, much less talk about it. So, I won’t dwell here.

Not a friendly place, I mean even airlines (or their security personnel) are beating up doctors and throwing them off planes, things are rough everywhere. People are shooting special needs kids in our schools, Hello! This is a rough, scary, unimaginable crime. I just cannot wrap my head around that at all! I cannot dwell on this.

We need to stay aware of what is happening and the possibilities of things happening in our area. We cannot hide our heads in the sand and pretend it isn’t happening but we, too, should not live only to dwell on these things. I know plenty of people who say things like, “I do not watch the news, it is so sad…people dying” and I wonder how they stay aware of only good current events? We have plenty of people who are looking to fuel hate by talking about this guy doing that or that guy doing this and maybe embellishing the story so it sways in the direction they want it to go in order to convince others to join in whatever hate they live in. Fueling a fire with wet wood will just give you smoke. There is way too much smoking going on and none of it based in fact. Stay informed, know the truth and don’t get played a fool. Try not to dwell on the smoke, but the fire.

I pay very close attention to the news, I want to know what is going on. One reason is, I do not want to comment on something only half cocked, that can be very dangerous for everyone involved. The other reason is, I have a son out there doing the hard stuff while serving in the Navy. In our area, I know there are many of you with someone you love out there, wherever there is, and you are worried about them, I get it! My son is not at liberty to tell me where he is, where he is going, or where he has been except while on shore leave. Our communication is very limited and I worry about him every single day. I try not to dwell on my worry.

I believe that to talk about something you do not know firsthand is gossip, especially if you share it. We need a strong America now, more than ever. Keep your opinions as opinions, you are entitled to those for sure. Truths are not opinions, there is a fine line and we need to recognize this and spread truth and love of country and our fellow Americans rather than division. We could be in for a bumpy ride here but if we hang onto one another we will be stronger than if we ride alone. Nobody likes to ride a roller coaster by themselves, you just don’t get the same results.

I believe the Navy knows what they are doing, they have been doing what they do for a long, long time and they have made my son a beaming strong man full of confidence and hope. So, the other day when I received an envelope addressed to me from the Navy…Well, what in the world was it? I was both nervous and excited. I opened this official letter with handsome Navy letterhead and emblem, so regal looking. As I read this letter and got to the second page I realized just how well the Navy has everything figured out. There were photo proofs of my son on his “cruise” and the background could include a picture of his ship and the name of the ship…I could purchase them for X amount of dollars. ‘Cruise Photo Package’ they called it. Well, duh, of course I was going to order it. So, they knew I needed to have these pictures. They knew I wanted to have a good picture of the U.S.S. George W. Bush as well. They are brilliant and I believe my son is in good hands… (feel the positivity here?) I may dwell on the picture of my handsome son, just a bit.

I keep my head out of the sand and I watch the news. I take the rough stuff and deal with it the best way I can. The news is not always bad though, without following the news I would not know that April the giraffe had her baby… finally! …and that it was a baby boy. This good news is always great in serving as a distraction from the bad stuff, at least it was for me. I was thrilled and stopped worrying as much about my son, if only for a bit. Balance is the key to happiness, I guess.

So, you have got to take the bad with the good.

Maintain the strength our country was founded on to be a strong America. Have faith in yourselves and your fellow countrymen. We Got This! Dwell on that!
