Colorful Colorado

Karen Johnson

The Buffalo Plains State is an old nickname given to Colorado, referring to the large herds of bison that once roamed the Colorado Plains and mountain grasslands. A herd of buffalo graze in a pasture below Buffalo Peaks, just west of Hartsel and north of Highway 24. Last week a few bison calves were spotted in the herds.

This month in our Colorful Colorado special feature, photojournalists Karen Johnson and Danyar Volkov share photos of mountain wildlife observed this winter and early spring.
