112th El Paso County Fair

Good day.  I wanted to highlight the County Fair in Calhan this week.  I am looking forward to enjoying another great week of activities like I have the past several years, but this will be my first one representing El Paso County.  This is the 112th El Paso County Fair, and I'm sure it will be another great reminder of our wonderful western and agricultural heritage. This year's Fair Queen is Kayla Summers, who I know will do a great job representing us all.

The Fair kicks off on July 15th, at 9am, with the official grand opening ceremony at 2:30pm at the Pavilion.  The Fair lasts until July 22.  Some of the events being held all week include a Petting Zoo, the Butterfly Encounter, comic ventriloquist Joe Gandelman, and Eyes of the Tiger exhibit.  Those that know me, know I love goats and chickens (we had them growing up), so look for me at the petting zoo.  Make sure you also enjoy the food booths, 4-H and livestock exhibits, carnival rides, performing animal shows, and the scheduled special events.  Some of these events include the NSPA Truck and Tractor Pull (July 15); CPRA Rodeo (July 20); Demolition Derby (July 22); music by Ryan Chrys & the Rough Cuts (July 15); music by the Flying W Wranglers & the Western Music Association (July 16); and Jake Worthington (runner up on the TV show "The Voice") & Sandy Wells (July 20).  There are many others as well.  For a full list of the daily events and concerts, visit www.elpasocountyfair.com.

And you don't just have to be a spectator during the fair.  You too can participate in various events.  On Saturday (July 15, 3pm), county commissioners and others will take our turn in the Roping Contest.  Do you love ice cream?  Or dill Pickles?  Can you blow a huge bubble gum bubble, call a hog or elk, spit a watermelon seed a country mile or Hula Hoop like an expert?  We've got competitions for you to join.  Most are free while others have a small entry fee ($2 for the ice cream eating contest), but the events will be even more fun with you as a participant.

General Admission prices to the Fair are: $7 for adults, $5 for seniors (55 and up), $3 for youth (3-12), and free for ages under 3.  However, there are various discount days and one free day.

Monday, the 17th, is El Paso County Day at the Fair, with free general admission for ALL.  The county will host unique and interesting displays and demonstrations showcasing emergency preparedness, response and recovery.  Additional discount days include, Military Appreciation Day (July 15 - free with Military ID [active, veterans, dependent]); Youth Day (July 18 - $2 for youth ticket); Dollar Day (July 19 - $1 general admission); Senior Day (July 21 - $3 for senior ticket); and First Responder Heroes Day (July 22 - $1 off each ticket for all police, EMS & Firefighter and each family member).

I hope all get to enjoy some time at the Fair this year.  I look forward to seeing you there and enjoying our western heritage.
