Tonja Himschoot and her nephew, Devon, place items on "The Giving Fence."

Once again this year, Fountain residents Tonja and Dean Himschoot have set up their “Giving Fence,” which provides free winter clothing items for local residents.

Attached to the “Giving Fence.” which is located in front of their house on Columbine St., are hats, scarves, and gloves. They are free to anybody who would like to take them off the fence. This year, they added a container which can hold larger items such as coats.

The couple started the “Giving Fence” last year after moving from Salida where they had set up a similar fence while living there. In its first year, over 1,000 items were placed on and taken off on the fence. The items are donated by friends, family, followers, and anybody who would like to provide warm items for up the upcoming winter.

“We welcome donations of course, but we vow to keep it stocked with hats, gloves, and scarves from the time the aspens turn until the spring arrives,” Tonja said.

The couple erected their first “Giving Fence” in 2013 in Salida. It grew and became more and more popular over the years.

“We decided to bring it to Fountain because we wanted to help people in our new community and we felt there would be a need for it here,” she said.

Tonja said she was always looking out for the children in her neighborhood. She goes out before the kids head to school to make sure the fence is well stocked. Then, she checks again before the kids head home after school.

“We are at the entrance to this neighborhood and a lot of kids walk by the fence while walking to and from school or to catch a bus to school so I make sure the fence is stocked before and after school,” she said.

“What’s important is the fence has been a blessing to literally hundreds of peoples,’” she concluded. “Used items that are no longer in need, find a warm place on the fence, where clothes pins are provided.  ‘The Giving Fence’ is always free and anyone is welcome to drop by and get some winter items.”
