The Best Thanksgiving Surprise Ever!!!

Time and space didn't permit me to get this column together in time for last week's issue. We rarely close for four-day weekends but every year on Thanksgiving we make it a practice to. Our hard working staff deserves some free time to enjoy the holiday with their families and friends, and to do whatever they wish with the added and very rare extra time off.

I had the pleasure of spending the time off with my cousins Judy and Chuck who live in eastern El Paso County. Judy and I have celebrated most holidays together since we were little kids getting into mischief, so it's always a welcome pleasure to get to see her again. I also got to spend precious time with Judy's daughter, Jessica (who has always been like a daughter to me) and her wife, Shauna (the newest daughter in my heart). It was extra precious time together as the girls left on the weekend to make their way to their new home in Washington state.

I was so thankful I had worked ahead of time to ensure I could take the four-day weekend. The time with my cousins was so wonderful. Then, on Friday, we got the surprise of a lifetime!! A very dear friend I met two years ago showed up with her family to surprise us all! Susan, who lives in Phoenix, has been here several times since we became instant friends, just as I have been to Arizona. During this time, Judy and Chuck came to cherish and adore her just as much as I do, and consider her family as well. She had told her husband, Colt, and daughters, Amber and Cam, about Colorado after her many visits here, and they all hoped to come themselves sometime.

Thanksgiving Day they started talking about how fun it would be to surprise us, and by that evening, around 9 or 10 p.m. they were on the road, bringing the girls as well as a nephew, Dawson who Judy and I nicknamed "Dusty."

We had no idea when we drove by a truck at the end of Judy's long driveway was theirs. They were ducking down, not wanting us to figure out it was them as we passed by. Judy joked that if she had more time she would go tell the people in the truck to "get a room!" Living in rural El Paso County, they sometimes see folks parking out that way for such reasons.

Soon, Jessica, who was with us, received a phone call from Shauna who had stayed behind, telling us who had been in that truck. We couldn't believe our ears. We quickly took care of the errands that needed to be completed to rush home and revel in having time with our dear friends who had driven straight through the night to get here.

The next day, we tried to work in a bit of siteseeing at Garden of the Gods and in Manitou as well as just enjoying the fellowship of being together. As so often happens with the best of times, they came to a close way too fast. By Monday morning they had to hit the road back to Arizona while I made my way back to work at the newspaper.

God sure works in mysterious ways and so many times I have been the blessed recipient of what I feel is Him working in our lives, so often with truly divine timing...

As you might recall, Thanksgiving week the topic of my column was about the Thanksgiving Miracle I received many years ago of spending my father's last Thanksgiving with him, not knowing at the time it would be his last. You could say I was especially missing Dad for whatever reason this year, and I believe that God had his hand in bringing me together with some of my dearest loved ones to fill our hearts with joy, friendship and most of all love over the Thanksgiving holiday. It was truly the best Thankgiving surprise I have ever received.
