Fountain Police Make Arrest In Fatal Hit And Run Accident Case

On Monday, stemming from a citizen tip, investigators were able to locate the vehicle and suspect involved in a hit and run fatality crash that took place Saturday evening, Aug. 5, near the intersection of South Highway 85 and Fontaine Boulevard.

The morning of Sunday, Aug. 6, the victim identified as 57-year-old Mario Michael Wells, died of his injuries.

Fountain Police announced Monday evening that investigators contacted 41-year-old Richard Bitters and subsequently charged him with Failure to Remain at the Scene of an Accident (Involving Death), stemming from his involvement in the crash. Bitters was transported to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on $10,000 bond.

"The Fountain Police Department would like to thank the public for their attention to this case and help in locating the suspect and his vehicle," Sgt. D. Scott Gilbertsen said. 

The police department will release further information as it becomes available.
