Preparing For A New School Year

August 9, 2017

As we start to reach the end of summer and we see the start of a new school year, I hope most of, if not all of you were able to enjoy some summer fun locally, or on vacation with your friends and family.  Family time is important.

I am just finishing up a week of vacation with one of my sisters and cousins, and it was a wonderful trip.  Fishing with my cousins (which included my godson) was fun but I have to admit I didn't have a lot of luck catching many fish on this trip.  But the days in the mountains were great, and the hikes and BBQing were outstanding.

This past week was my first away from work since taking office in January, and I am looking forward to a great second half of the year.  The budgeting process for 2018 will begin soon, and I will push to prioritize roads and public safety in the new budget.

I also wanted to welcome back all students to our local schools as we start back up in our various districts.  Having taught AFROTC as an associate professor at a college for three years, and then full time as a middle school science teacher (and now as a substitute), I take great interest in education and the success of our youth.  I wish them luck in all their classes and hope they find the motivation to aim high and strive for their goals.

Additionally, here are a few basics for students to help them be at their best for school:

* get a good night's sleep each day (don't be tempted to use your cell phones or other devices late at night;

* turn them off and charge them in a location outside the bedroom);

* don't skip breakfast, as you'll need energy to stay focused on school;

* remember your school supplies;

* and, find a quiet place at home to complete homework (ideally, this will be the same location and the same time each night) where you won't be disturbed or distracted.

For parents: be involved and ensure your students are prepared to learn each day.  I wish you all the best.
