February 7, 2018

Members of VFW Post 6461 in Fountain will be handing out Buddy Poppies from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, in front of Safeway, 6925 Mesa Ridge Parkway, weather permitting.

The donations that are given for the poppies will stay in the local area helping veterans and their families.

What do the VFW Buddy Poppy and Valentine’s Day have in common?” a post spokesperson asked. “Both are a way of showing that we Remember and our Love.”

The spokesperson continued, “Saint Valentine’s Day started in the 1st century with the churches honoring at least three different Valentine’s. It wasn’t until the 14th century that the idea of Love was added to the day.”

She continued, “Modern customs were developed in England in the 19th century and they spread to other countries in the 20th and early 21st century.

She concluded, “Buddy Poppy shows our Remembrance and Love of our departed veterans.”
