Good Shepherd United Methodist Church - God's Treasure Hunt

A few thoughts from our Senior Pastor Terilynn Russ as we begin a new month and they serve as a reminder that we are all unique and valuable in the eyes of the Lord.

Things that sparkle always catch my eye! Cubic zirconium fits my budget, however, my eyes are intrinsically drawn to the authentic treasures. During a gem and mineral show in Tucson, Arizona, a gem dealer was casually strolling the aisle of rocks and stones. There were hundreds and hundreds of them displayed, row after row. Yet, the gem dealer’s eye was drawn to a rock with a dull blue-violet color and the shape of a potato.

Very calmly, the gem dealer asked the vendor, “You want $15 for this?” Realizing the rock was not as pretty as others in his stock, the vendor was ready to bargain. “Will you take it for $10?” The gem dealer did and made more than a fair investment. The ugly unpolished rock was certified as a 1,905 carat natural star sapphire. That’s 800 carats larger than the largest stone of its kind. The appraised value is over $2.28 million.

Jesus Christ is a gem dealer, only he is a dealer for souls. Each of us is individually more valuable to him than a 1,905 carat natural star sapphire. The Lover of souls is a merchant with an eye that recognizes value in ordinary people like you and me. Isn’t it nice to be appraised as one of God’s authentic treasures!
