Memorial Day. Flags and Poppies


Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was first celebrated on May 5, 1868 to honor those Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. At that time the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established the day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Civil War dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, leader of the Union Veteran's Association, declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30.
