George- Where Are You When We Need You?


Almost every year between Flag Day and the 4th of July our family watches an old black and white movie made in 1942. It's called "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and it stars Jimmy Cagney in a Hollywood interpretation of the life of George Michael Cohan. George was a successful Broadway playwright and patriot. He wrote many songs with a patriotic theme and was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 1936 for "his ability to instill in the hearts of the growing citizenry a loyal and patriotic spirit for their country and what it stands for in the eyes of the world."

America used to stand for something....
