Both Widefield Cross Country teams advanced to the state meet for the third straight year following regional competition Thursday at Fountain-Fort Carson High School.

Ryan Outler took first yet again beating a runner who had also done amazing throughout this season. This is the second year in a row a Widefield runner has won the Regional meet.

The boys' team did well as they placed fourth putting them in a position to run at the Class 4A state meet. The Glads ran another great pack as their middle group ran 17th (Miles Mena), 20th (Brandon Williams Jr.) and 21st (Jonathan Cabrera).

The girls also did well, finishing fourth, with a surprising finish from Vadianna Martinez, which put them in a safe position to go to state.

"I'm very ecstatic that we did it again (going to state)," said Head Coach Erik Nelson."Throughout the week someone told me that Widefield had a good run, implying that our legacy was over, but I'm sure that this is just the beginning."

Next week the boys and girls will run at the Norris Penrose Event Center chasing the state title, it will be tough but we're all looking onward towards the challenge.

School District 3 teams went 1-1 in league games Friday night.

The Widefield Gladiators defeated Liberty 21-14 in overtime at home in a Class 4A Pikes Peak League game. The Mesa Ridge Grizzlies, meanwhile, fell 46-7 to Vista Ridge on the road in a Class 4A Southern League matchup.

Talk about a late-game comeback, as the Gladiators were able to pull it off in overtime by a score of 21-14. The Glads win improved their record to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in league. As for the Liberty Lancers, they were sent back home devastated.

The Lancers were able to come out in the first quarter and score a touchdown, but it only got worse for them as things rolled on.

Widefield Coach Nic Olney must have given an inspiring halftime speech as all of the Gladiators points came from the second half and even overtime.

Quarterback Treshawn Green moved the ball down the field with his arm and especially his feet as he scored two of the three touchdowns. Frankie Ingraldi also had a rushing touchdown.

Kaleb Maska was Green's hidden weapon as he caught seven of Green's 12 completions. The running game is always big with Widefield and it really showed as Ingraldi touched the ball 31 times from the backfield with 144 rushing yards with a long run of 26 yards. Although the Glads had two offensive fumble losses, the defense showed up and got three fumble recoveries, one interception, and three heart rate-raising sacks.

"It was very exciting that we pulled off this win in overtime," said Nathan Broadbent "We faced much adversity in the past and it carried onto this week when we were down at halftime. We knew we had to give everything we got and we came out on top."

He continued, "This win really boosted our confidence and even though we have a tough matchup against Pueblo West next week, we will battle through anything that comes our way."

"We are looking towards a tough challenge next week and will try and continue our success" Olney said.

This Friday, the Glads go play a scary Pueblo West team that is 6-2. The game is at 7 p.m. at Pueblo West. Let's Go Glads!!

Mesa Ridge only trailed Vista Ridge 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Grizzlies were outscored 49-0 the rest of the game.

Trevon Walker rushed for 172 yards while scoring the Grizzlies' only touchdown. The senior has now rushed for 1,241 yards on the season.

Grizzly quarterbacks threw two interceptions while getting sacked four times. Mesa Ridge also lost two fumbles.

The Grizzlies return to action Friday when they host Cheyenne Mountain. Mesa Ridge finishes the regular season Friday, Nov. 2, at Grand Junction Central.
