Talons are the sharp claw at the end of a birds toe. Where we have fingernails or toenails, birds have talons. Talons are used for different purposes on different birds. The main purpose on all birds is to hold onto a perch. Without talons, a bird could never live or roost in a tree. How a bird uses its talons is often determined by what they eat and how they nest. Whatever the use, they can’t live without them. Birds have adapted over thousands of years to master their environment. What a woodpecker uses them for would never work for a magpie.
