A Great Horned Owlet with it's mama.

It's owlet time! One of my favorite times of the year. Owlets are one of the first birds to hatch each year in El Paso County. The bigger the bird, the earlier they hatch. Owlets need to hatch early, often before spring hits. Owlets must be big enough and strong enough to hunt on their own by the end of summer. The time from breeding to fledging is so much longer than small birds. Owlets must be hatched sooner so they will be strong enough and experienced enough to take care of themselves before next year's breeding season.
