First Memorial Day at Pikes Peak National Cemetery,

and Activities At Our Parks

I hope all enjoyed a wonderful weekend and took some time to commemorate Memorial Day and remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our great country.

I participated in two events that Monday.  The morning event was the first annual Memorial Day ceremony held at the new Pikes Peak National Cemetery.  It was extremely well attended and I was honored to be able to read the County's Memorial Day proclamation.  I also joined scores of others at the City of Fountain ceremony later that day to honor the lives lost while in military service.  Thanks to all those that organized both of the events and for those who attended.

Also, as our weather warms up and you look for family events outdoors, you might want to consider having your little ones attend "Nature Adventures: Terrific Turtles" at the Fountain Creek Nature Center on Thursday, June 6, from 9-10:30 a.m.  Children, ages 3-6 with an adult, will learn about turtles and enjoy puppet shows or stories, crafts, hands-on activities and discovery time on the trail.  Cost is $3 per person and you must pre-register.  To register or for more information call 719-520-6745.

Finally, I wanted to give residents an early heads up for events later this summer.  Concerts in the Park returns in July.  County Parks is collaborating with Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society to host eight Concerts in the Park this summer.  All concerts are free and will be at Bear Creek Regional Park every Wednesday from July 10 through August 28.  Concerts will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.unless noted otherwise.  The Concerts in the Park is sponsored by El Paso County Parks and the Pikes Peak Jazz and Swing Society.  For more information about the concerts, visit www.ppjass.org or call (719) 520-6977.  I'll remind everyone again as we get closer and put out a list of bands, but check your calendars now and save your Wednesdays.
