Games to raise money for teacher

District 8 basketball teams will be playing for cancer awareness and to raise funds for a teacher battling an illness on Jan. 21-22.

The games will be played at the Fountain-Fort Carson High School Gym, where Fountain Middle School teacher Jimmy Garcia will be honored.

Garcia was diagnosed with stomach cancer in October, Head Boys Basketball Coach Paul Mileto said. He has been unable to work while undergoing numerous treatments; and despite insurance, his family has incurred many expenses that go along with treatment. Garcia had to get a lot of donated leave from other district employees to cover some of his absence from work, Mileto noted.

“He’s well-known in the district,” Mileto said. “A lot of my basketball players have had him as a teacher.”

Garcia actually started out completing observation hours with Mileto, then started his student teaching alongside him. His first several years in D8 were as a P.E. teacher, but now he teaches art.

All proceeds and admission from the games will go to Garcia’s family, organizers said. The schedule is:

Jan. 21 – JV boys, 4 p.m .; Varsity girls, 5:30 p.m .; Varsity boys, 7 p.m.

Jan. 22 – C Squad boys, 4 p.m .; C Squad girls, 5:30 p.m .; JV girls, 7 p.m.

The teams also are selling T-shirts to raise funds for Garcia. Shirts may be ordered online at:

Visit the district on Facebook for a direct link to the order form at “Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8.”

Orders are due by Jan. 10. Payments may be made in cash, check, or online. If paying by check, make it out to FFCHS basketball. Checks may be given to Coach Mileto, the front office of the schools, or Head Girls Basketball Coach LouAnn Guiden.
