Yesterday morning (Wed., Jan. 15), the El Paso County Coroner’s Office positively identified two bodies found inside a vehicle Tuesday night on I-25 south of Fountain near the Ray Nixon Power Plant.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, which is leading the investigation, the body of a female, a reported missing juvenile, and an 18-year-old male, identified as Samuel Hoffman of Littleton, were both located inside the vehicle at approximately 7:45 p.m. by Colorado State Patrol and Fountain Police Department personnel. Upon their approach, they heard a single gunshot from the vehicle.
According to the sheriff’s department, at this time it is believed that Hoffman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the vehicle before he could be contacted by police. Also, the cause and manner of death has not been determined by the El Paso County Coroner; however, department personnel are investigating this case as a murder-suicide – a chain of events they believe began in Douglas County.
“Our hearts go out to the families of both of these young people whose lives were lost,” Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said. “We know this is a difficult time for friends and family; we want you to know that we mourn with you. We will work diligently to find answers for everyone involved.”
At this time, sheriff’s department personnel are working in conjunction with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and El Paso County Coroner’s Office, Fountain Police Department and Colorado State Patrol on this active and ongoing investigation.
