Season of elections, nature events

Good day, I hope all are well. The primary election season is coming fast and Colorado is part of the Super Tuesday Presidential Primary on March 3, so I want to get out additional information on voting and county drop box locations. Also, don't forget to mark May 9 on your calendar for El Paso County's annual Fishing Derby.
I'll start off this week's column with an early "Save the Date" for the fourth annual Fountain Valley Fishing Derby on May 9th at Willow Springs Ponds. Hosted by El Paso County, we've gone from 100 kids the first year, to 150 in year two, and 165 children last year. Bring out the kids for a FREE morning of fun and prizes (ages 5-15), then stay for the free hot dog lunch (for all in attendance). Mark your calendars early for this great annual family event. Additional details to come in April.
Also, the Presidential Primary Election is almost here, and the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office has opened five additional Voter Service and Polling Centers (VSPCs). The location of these VSPCs include four Clerk's branch offices and UCCS. The Clerk's Main Office already is open as a VSPC. All six of these VSPCs will be open 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24 through Friday, Feb. 28 and Monday, March 2. These VSPCs also will be open Saturday, Feb. 29, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. On Election Day, March 3, they are open from 7 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. A voter may visit any VSPC in the county. At each location, a voter may:
• Update their voter registration file
• Request a replacement ballot
• Vote on an ADA ballot marking device
• Drop off their voted ballot
• Vote in person
Voters are advised to use only the ballot drop boxes to return their mail ballot after Monday, Feb. 24. If a voter returns their mail ballot through the United States Postal Service, it may not be delivered to the Clerk's Office in time to be counted. All ballots must be received by the Clerk's Office by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted. Postmarked ballots received after the election deadline cannot be counted. If you have any questions please call (719) 575-VOTE (8683) or email [email protected] For more election information or to find the locations of our VSPCs, please visit http://www.EPCVotes.com.
Finally, the Fountain Creek Nature Center is hosting a unique and fun family event you might be interested in this Saturday. "Trolls in the Woods" STEM Competition is this Feb. 29, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Join the Nature Center team to build the troll of your imagination with the dead, downed, and brown tree limbs on the forest floor of fountain Creek Nature Center's Magic Woods. Teams of families or friends (5 or less per team) may bring rope, twine, or string to construct your troll. No Power tools, please! A tour of the giants will take place at noon. Prizes will be awarded in various categories. Cost is $10 per team. Prepaid registration is required. To register or for more information, call 719-520-6745.
God bless and enjoy a great week.
