A multi-agency effort to continue and eventually complete an extensive greenway along the Fountain Creek Watershed has kicked into high gear.

A stakeholders meeting for various parks and wildlife agencies, landowners, and area cities and counties was held in January to introduce this campaign, which is being organized by the Fountain Creek Watershed Flood Control and Greenway District in conjunction with a consulting firm.

In summary, the desire is to establish a fully functional greenway near the creek throughout the region. Development of a master plan for this will require input from a variety of sources, and meetings will continue to be held every other month to discuss ideas, obstacles and progress. The next meeting is set for March 18 at Fountain City Hall at 2 p.m.

This photo from the Fountain Creek Watershed District presentation on the greenway project shows an typical 10-foot crusher fine trail south of Colorado Springs. This is an example of a well-maintained trail already established as part of the greenway.

Staff from consultant THK Associates explained that much of the trail is already complete in various forms - some concrete, some "crusher" mix, some dirt - and in varying conditions and widths. However, there are large sections of the trail that have either never been developed or which have severe damage and need to be repaired.

Some sections through Colorado Springs, Fountain and Pueblo are considered to be in good condition, but much of the stretch between Fountain and Pueblo needs work.

Associates said better infrastructure is needed to deal with water flow and erosion prevention, along with basic structure to make the paths attractive and user-friendly to all visitors who wish to enjoy the greenway for recreation, nature appreciation and more.

Most of this greenway would be incorporated into the Colorado Front Range Trail - a statewide system of trails that also consists of existing paths and planned projects.
