County monitoring the coronavirus

Last updated 3/11/2020 at 12:46pm

I hope all enjoyed the recent pleasant weather this past weekend and that you will spend a nice St. Patrick's Day as well.

This week I want to pass along an update from the County Public Health Department. While there has been one confirmed case of the coronavirus in El Paso County, our Public Health officials believe risk remains low for our community but they also want to provide additional recommendations and precautions.

El Paso County Public Health (EPCPH) continues to work closely with local, state and federal partners to assure a streamlined response and help prevent further spread of disease in our community.

"Now, more than ever, we want to remind people to focus on the steps they can take to help prevent the spread of disease," said Dr. Robin Johnson, EPCPH Medical Director. "The best thing you can do is remain calm, practice good hygiene, and stay home if you are sick."

EPCPH also reminds the public to:

• Wash your hands frequently or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your inner elbow shirt sleeve

• Avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms

• Stay home if you're sick

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

EPCPH also encourages residents to seek out credible, reliable sources of information on COVID-19. You may call (303) 389-1687 or 1-877-462-2911 (CO HELP) with questions about COVID-19, email [email protected], or go to for the latest updates.

Finally, as we start nearing a return to spring, I thought I'd let all know about some upcoming events at our Fountain Creek Nature Center. Birding 101 classroom sessions will be Thursdays: March 12 & 19, 6 p.m.–8 p.m., with field trips on Saturdays, March 14 & 21, 8:30 a.m.–11 a.m.

Learn beginning birding basics and develop skills in identifying birds by sight and sound. Prepaid registration required. $50 per member or $60 per non-member. To register or for more information call 719-520-6745 or go to for a full list of events.

Enjoy a wonderful week, everyone.
