I've heard other naturalists talk about 'leaky gut'. It this some kind of new modern-world problem, or is it baloney? And if it's real, how does one know if they have leaky gut, and how would it be treated?

Leaky gut, or intestinal hyperpermeability, is a phenomenon that occurs when the tight junctions of the intestinal wall become loose, allowing harmful substances to enter the bloodstream. Mainstream medical professionals do not recognize leaky gut as a real condition. (Qu'elle Surprise!)
