Ballots for June 30 primary in the mail

Good morning. I wanted to provide an update on the senior and disabled veterans property tax exemption I spoke about in a previous column. It appears our efforts to save the exemption for our residents worked.

I am happy to report that the final state budget proposal preserves the $163 million property tax exemption for seniors and disabled veterans that the state contemplated cutting. If you recall from a couple weeks ago, I reported that El Paso County was advocating on behalf of our seniors and veterans to keep the exemption in place for residents and I asked for your help in contacting the legislature and governor and asking they support our seniors and veterans. Due to state budget shortfalls, the longstanding Senior and Disabled Homestead Tax Exemption was in trouble of being suspended and the Joint Budget Committee originally recommended it be cut. Thankfully, because of our combined efforts, including residents providing feedback to our state leaders, the exemption for seniors and disabled veterans remains in place. There are 27,000 seniors in El Paso County currently enrolled in the tax relief program who will remain eligible for the tax exemption. Thanks to all those that took the time to contact our state leadership and advocated for our seniors and disabled veterans.

Also, I want to remind residents that our El Paso County Veteran Services Office is currently seeking nominations for its Annual Veteran of the Year Award. El Paso County annually honors a veteran for exemplary military service and continued willingness to serve fellow veterans and their community. Nominees must have been honorably discharged or retired from military service from one of the five Armed Forces of the United States, including Reserve or National Guard, or the U.S. Merchant Marines, and must be residing in El Paso County. Previous award recipients include Victor M. Fernandez, Leo F. Martinez, and Duane K.L. France. For more information about the award or to nominate a veteran, please visit https://communityservices.elpasoco.com/veterans-services/veteran-of-the-year/. Forms with attachments can be dropped off, received by mail, fax, or emailed by June 30. Email your nominations to: [email protected]

God bless and have a wonderful week.
