The Bates Ranch

This story dates from the late 1930s, when an interesting bit of history was made public. The ranch, near present-day Security, had been settled in the early days of the Civil War. J.W. Bates had come from England about the time of the great Colorado Gold Rush in 1859. He settled between Colorado City and Fountain along Fountain Creek, near where Old U.S. 85 meets south Las Vegas Street.
The whole area was the scene of visits from American Indians. The white settlers were regularly harassed by bands, mostly plains Indians who had used this area as a seasonal residence. The story of the raid...
