El Paso County Recreation Services announces events for August

Outdoor Safety Series: Family Hiking Safety

Saturday, August 1, 9-10:30 a.m.

Join us at Fox Run Regional Park to learn about being safe in the outdoors! In this class, families are invited to learn about hiking basics, preparedness, and outdoor awareness. Geared for children ages 6-12 years old. $5 per child or $4 for members of El Paso County Nature Centers: parents are welcome to attend but do not need to pay. Pre-registration required due to limited class size. Due to COVID-19, we are recommending all participants to wear face masks. Register online here.

Rainbow Falls History Walk

Saturday, August 8, 10-11:30 a.m.

Did you know the Civilian Conservation Corps built the bridge over Rainbow falls in the 1930’s during the Great Depression? Come and discover the rich history of the Rainbow Falls area.  This walk will be presented by Douglass Edmundson, a Board Member at the Manitou Spring Heritage Center.  Doug is a fourth generation Manitou Springs resident whose personal mission is to help encourage others to be better stewards of our heritage.

$3/member, $4/non-member. Pre-registration required: call 719-520-6977 for more information or register online at elpasoco.com.

Flow Patterns and Boat Races

Saturday, August 15, 8:30–9:45 a.m.

Why do some objects float and others sink? Construct and decorate a boat from different materials. Race your boat down the stream and pick the best spot along the starting points to launch your boat, based on what you learn about the water flow patterns and velocity. For kids ages 8-12, $5 per person, pre-registration required. This program will take place at Rainbow Falls Historic Site.

Rainbow Falls Clean-Up Day

Saturday, August 22, 9–11 a.m.

Spend a morning giving back to your community by helping clean up Rainbow Falls. Be sure to dress appropriately, bring a water bottle and work gloves if you have them. All are welcome: call 719-520-6977 to RSVP or register online.
