An interesting situation came up in a recent Facebook posting. The subject was railroading, of course, but the question was on the name of a certain location. In the old days, much as today, certain locations had official names, like the railroad station names. But there were also informally used names. These were generally "in-house" names used between crewmen. Most of these names went away once the users moved on.
