Shooting death of 12-year-old considered accidental

The Fountain Police Department has reported that a shooting incident that killed a 12-year-old girl Wednesday evening is being considered accidental.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, FPD officers were dispatched to the 6800 block of Kasson Drive for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located girl with a serious injury from a gunshot wound. An off-duty El Paso County Sheriff's Deputy was on scene performing life-saving measures, and officers took over those efforts once they arrived. Unfortunately, the young female did not survive. The girl did reside at the Kasson Drive address, police said.

FPD's Investigations Division has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Police say there is no threat to the public in connection with this incident, which is being investigated as an accidental shooting.

"FPD is deeply saddened by this tragic event," FPD Public Information Officer Lisa Schneider said. "Out of respect for the family's privacy, we will not be releasing any further information on this incident."

Police are not indicating who was in contact with the firearm when it went off.
