Courthouse is closed, nature is still open

Last updated 8/5/2020 at 12:05pm

I pray all are doing well and enjoying a nice day. This week I want to highlight one temporary building closure as well as congratulate the efforts of one or our county departments that recently received recognition at the state level because of its outstanding services.

The Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) recently recognized El Paso County for its 2019 C-Stat Distinguished Performance. The county's outstanding performance efforts were tied to programs that help Coloradans, including helping more local families move toward a stronger economic future by keeping vulnerable adults and children safe, delivering crucial food and energy assistance in a timely manner and connecting people to employment. The Distinguished Performance Award recognizes counties that are timely, safe and accurate in work and meeting goals. Counties that meet their goals are more likely to be meeting the needs of individuals and families in their community, and more likely to have higher completion rates of applications. My thanks to all our County Department of Human Services staff and leadership that contributed to this outstanding recognition.

Also, the El Paso County Combined Courthouse will be closed temporarily until Aug. 14. The Courthouse will only be open for essential functions and closed to all other business through Aug. 14. Until then, visitors to the El Paso County Combined Courthouse will only be permitted to enter for filing of the following documents:

•To file a petition for temporary civil protection order and attend a protection order hearing

•To file a petition for a temporary emergency risk protection order and attend an emergency risk protection order hearing

•To file a petition for the appointment of an emergency guardianship and/or special conservator

•To file a motion to restrict parenting time and/or parental abduction prevention

•To file a petition for judicial bypass

If you were scheduled to appear in El Paso County Combined Court, please contact the division clerk for additional information about appearing by WebEx, phone, or rescheduling.

Finally, a reminder that our two wonderful county nature centers are open, although indoor capacity is currently limited. For those looking for activities and family-friendly fun, this coming Saturday, Aug. 8, you can learn about Pickling at the Fountain Creek Nature Center from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. Learn to preserve vegetables using research-based techniques to safely pickle vegetables; covers water bath canning basics. The workshop is hands-on and you will take home your own jar of pickles. Participants 16+, and prepaid registration is required. $12/person, with a limit of 12 participants total. Or for the little ones, come out for the Twos & Threes Outdoors: Ladybug & Friends, on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 9-10:15 a.m. Price is $3 per person including siblings and adults. Explore nature with your 2- or 3-year-old through interactive activities, a story, and a short hike. To register for either activity or for further information, call 719-520-6387.
