Storm wreaks havoc on horse rescue site

With sadness in our hearts, we must write about yet another setback that NSHR is facing this year. As if COVID-19 rearing its ugly head and causing donations to drop drastically wasn’t enough, and the inability to hold our fundraising events, we have Mother Nature to deal with.

On Aug. 20, NSHR was hit by a small tornado that did substantial damage. Upon initial assessment, we were able to see non-life threatening injures to six horses. This is the second storm that has hit us, as back in June we were struck by a microburst that caused major roof damage to our barn and arena fencing. We had just finally gotten the insurance squared away and received quotes to replace the roof when this storm hit.

The fortunate thing is that all of the horses are still alive — granted, they were all scared to death and shaking — but alive. The unfortunate thing is that we do not know if the insurance company will provide any more money to rebuild the barn. This is going to take an extreme amount of time, money, energy and sweat to get the rescue back in tip-top shape.

If you would like to volunteer your time or supplies to help us rebuild, please contact us via our FB page Next Step Horse Rescue Colorado or call (719) 213-9144 to see what is needed.

If you find it in your heart to donate monetarily, you can do so by sending a check to:
