CHSAA OK's fall football, spirit

The CHSAA Board of Directors voted last week (Sept. 16) to approve variances allowing high schools to play field hockey, football and sideline spirit. According to a CHSAA press release, schools can play these sports in Season A (fall) or Season C (spring), but not both. CHSAA is also pursuing variance approvals for other sports in the near future.

“I would like to thank the CHSAA Board of Directors and the CHSAA staff for their commitment to reconsidering the options once the variances were provided to the CHSAA office. I would also like to thank our membership, who has been in this whirlwind as we sought a resolution,” said CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green. “We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the Governor’s office to obtain variances for wrestling, swimming and other sports in Seasons B, C and D.”

Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 (FFC8) has confirmed plans to move forward with fall football and spirit.

“I am excited to see these steps being taken to allow a safe return to play for football and spirit,” FFC8 Athletic Director Jared Felice said. “Our coaches and student-athletes have worked hard through the offseason to get the opportunity to play, and they will be ready upon a formal declaration of the new start date for Season A.”

CHSAA posted an update on Sept. 17 giving the Season A football schedule: practices start Sept. 24, first games take place Oct. 8, first round of playoffs on Nov. 21, semifinals on Nov. 28 and championships on Dec. 5.

Samantha Briggs, director of communication for Widefield School District 3 (WSD3), confirmed the district’s schools are also moving forward with plans for fall spirit and football.

“We are grateful and excited to be able to give our students a sense of normalcy,” Briggs said. “Activities and athletics are an important part of a student’s educational experience.”

The Widefield High School Athletic Department posted an announcement on its Facebook page on Sept. 18 that the fall spirit and football season would start Sept. 24, and instructing interested students to get athletic application packets online or from the main office.

In addition to the restriction allowing schools to only play in Season A or Season C, CHSAA has also listed some other restrictions. Participants (coaches and officials included) must wear masks when they are not actively playing. Whenever participants are on the sidelines or not in active play, they must stay 6 feet away from non-household members. Participants are not allowed to go into the spectator area. Football teams may have as many as 50 players per sideline on the field during a game (field hockey can have 25 players). Spirit teams can have the maximum numbers of participants based on their CHSAA classification, but must perform off the field of play and be at least 25 feet away from players and spectators.
