Christmas Tree Project faces explosive need in 10th year

Christmas Tree Project "elves", or volunteers, pose with some of the trees they help to give away to families in need.

It started in Colorado Springs in 2010, with one tree, a Craigslist ad and $20. Michelle and David Fein wanted to give away their artificial Christmas tree to someone in need. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree. The Feins decided they had to try to meet the demand.

The Feins told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted them to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season was all o...
