A Wednesday evening shooting at the South Academy Highlands shopping center on Venetucci Boulevard has resulted in one arrest so far.

At approximately 9:22 p.m. Wednesday, three officers with the Fountain Police Department (FPD), were standing in the parking lot of MOD Pizza, 4465 Venetucci Blvd., when they heard a series of gunshots. Officers noticed a black truck slowly driving on Venetucci headed toward South Academy Boulevard. As the truck passed by the parking lot of MOD Pizza, additional shots were fired in the direction of where the officers were standing.

A short time later, a black truck was stopped by Fort Carson Military Police before it had a chance to enter the Mountain Post. Thanks to video footage obtained from businesses in the 4400 block of Venetucci Boulevard, the truck and the occupants were positively identified as being involved in the prior shots fired incident on Venetucci.

Authorities arrested 21-year-old Michael Hughes and charged him with three counts of felony first-degree assault on a peace officer. Charges are pending for the other occupants of the vehicle. Thankfully, no officers were injured during the incident.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information or who is a witness to these investigations is asked to call the Fountain Police Department at (719) 390-5555; or if you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (719) 634-STOP (7867) or 1-800-222-8477.
