Hometown Heroes banners expand in downtown Fountain

Fountain Utilities workers hang up a Gold Star banner in honor of Sgt. Joseph Collette, a Fort Carson soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2019, at the corner of Santa Fe Avenue and Alabama Avenue. Nine other banners honoring active duty service members or veterans also have been placed along the downtown Fountain corridor.

Now in its third year, Fountain's "Hometown Heroes" Military Appreciation Banner program has nearly doubled in size. Last week, Fountain utility workers hung up the new round of banners throughout the downtown corridor along Santa Fe Avenue, where they will remain on display for most of the year.

At the request of citizens, the city recently opened up eligibility to a wider range of honorees. There are now 10 banners for specific individuals who have served – or are currently serving – in the military. Previously, it had been restricted primarily to active-duty military. One Gold Star...
