Great horned owlets nesting on a pallet high on the shelf of a home improvement store.

March may be one of my favorite times of the year for birding. The big birds are paired up and starting to nest. March is the peak of the nesting season for many owls. Not all owls nest this early in the year, but the big ones do. In fact, most big raptors mate and nest earlier than any other bird. As you drive around El Paso County, you may start noticing big raptors like hawks and eagles perched or flying around together. Although most of these big raptors mate for life, it is not common for them to hang out together until it is mating season. This month I want to focus on the owls....
