E. M. (Mel) Estes, Jr. passed away on February 19, 2021 at his home in Fountain, Colorado. Mel was born July 31, 1925, in Colorado Springs to Elisha M. and Wilhelmina M. Estes. Mel grew up on the plains of Eastern Colorado on his family’s cattle ranch. He attended Crowley County High School.

Mel met the love of his life, Mildred Jean Goss, in La Veta, Colorado. They were married at the La Veta Baptist Church on August 24, 1947. They celebrated 73 ½ years of marriage. Mel and Mildred settled in Fountain, Colorado, in 1955, after living in several other Colorado towns.

Mel worked as an electrician and later as the Colorado State Electrical Inspector out of Walsenburg and then Alamosa, before retiring back to the family home in Fountain.

Mel loved to go fishing, especially with his brother, Bob. He learned to tie flies and became an avid fly fisherman. He enjoyed Colorado history and archeology, belonging to the Pikes Peak Archeology Society for many years. Mel’s passion in life was spending time at their mountain ranch on La Veta Pass. He and Mildred built a cabin at their ranch and spent as much time there as possible. The cabin was destroyed in the Spring Fire in 2018. The loss greatly impacted Mel.

Mel is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mildred, and his children: sons Joel (Georganne) and Tim (Christina Yen) Estes, and daughter Tamara Estes; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Elisha and Wilhelmina Estes, and his siblings.

Services for Mel will be private later this summer.

Donations in Mel’s name can be sent to The United Methodist Church of Fountain, Colorado, or Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation.
