I hope all are doing well today. I am pleased to announce that our annual free fishing derby for youth is back this year, and that we are encouraging residents to nominate their favorite small business for recognition during Small Business Week.

El Paso County is again hosting its Free Youth Fishing Derby at Willow Springs Ponds in Fountain Creek Regional Park Saturday, May 8, from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Youth ages 5 to 15 are encouraged to get outside by participating in a free fishing derby at Willow Springs Ponds.

They will learn to fish with an opportunity to earn prizes for what they catch (Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish, Most Fish Caught, and more). Registered participants will also be entered for a chance to win a prize. Bring your own rod, reel, tackle and favorite bait and get ready to catch the "big one."

Pre-registration is required, and spaces are limited. To participate in this year's derby, please complete the online registration at https://communityservices.elpasoco.com/free-youth-fishing-derby/. I hope to see you there for all the fun and prizes.

Also, this year the Pikes Peak Region will recognize 2021 Small Business Week from June 6 through June 10. The annual event will kick off with a Food Truck Cook-off (limited number drive-thru style) and include a small business award ceremony and a variety of workshops and events to educate, celebrate and champion small businesses in the Pikes Peak Region. The Pikes Peak Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado (BBB) want to hear about small businesses and the entrepreneurs that help them thrive.

The SBDC and BBB seek nominations in several categories to recognize the accomplishments and efforts in the small business community. The five categories are: Small Business Person of the Year; Young Entrepreneur of the Year; Small Business Champion of the Year; Family-Owned Small Business of the Year; and Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year.

For more information or to nominate a small business or entrepreneur, visit http://www.pikespeaksbdc.org/events/week. Nominations close April 25.

Have a great week, everyone.
