Over the course of the last week and a half, friends and loved ones have added to memorials at the site of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two young people at the intersection of Fountain Mesa Road and Mesa Ridge Parkway on April 17. Flowers, mementos and tributes to Jayson 'Sonny' Izquierdo, 9, and Nathaniel (Nate) Dabney, 17, are an indication of the impact these two had on people around them. Sonny's family held a funeral service last Friday, where loved ones described him as funny, intelligent and loving. "He was just too good for this earth," his mother said.
The boys were crossing the street along with Sonny's 16-year-old brother, who was hit but survived. The Dabney family is raising money to help cover expenses. They already were dealing with a serious medical situation with a newborn and were in a Denver hospital when they received news of the accident. They laid Nate to rest on Wednesday during a small ceremony.
"The family has been struggling with the funeral costs associated and the medical bills for their newborn," said Trish Ruhaak, the sister of Nate's stepmother. "All of the support for this tragic accident has meant the world to those who need it most."
