What color are blue jays? The obvious answer might be “blue.” Actually, there is no blue at all on a blue jay! Blue pigment in nature is very rare, but nature can play tricks on the eyes. Some birds can appear to have blue color in the feathers when the light hits just right, but the blue jay will always look blue.

One of my favorite birds in our area is the blue jay. They are gregarious and very vocal. Blue jays are extremely family oriented. Blue jays are intelligent and are known for having a complex social system. You will probably hear them before you see them. Where there is one,...
