Last Wednesday Security Fire was called out for a possible illegal burn. Upon arrival the crews found a makeshift fire pit full of building materials being burned. The makeshift fire pit was very close to a neighboring fence, shed, and overhead power lines presenting possible danger. The illegal burn was extinguished, and the party on scene was advised of the rules on burning.
Processed wood is illegal to burn at any time, even in an approved fire pit. An approved fire pit consists of store-bought pits with covers or properly dug, built, and covered pits. SFD strongly recommends a water source such as a hose nearby when operating a legal fire pit.
In certain circumstances the burning of unprocessed "yard waste" is legal with an approved permit available from El Paso County Health Department. Please see their website for details: elpasocountyhealth.org under "Environmental Health"
