Local election news: Candidates for city, school board races

There were some last-minute changes to the list of candidates running for City Council and Mayor in Fountain last week.

In addition, numerous individuals filed petitions with local school districts for their board vacancies.

As reported in the Aug. 25 issue, Council Member Greg Lauer had announced his run for mayor but did not return his signed petition. He announced at last Tuesday's City Council meeting that he had decided to resign from the City Council after that evening due to demands from his job, and thus would not be able to run for mayor either.

Lauer's term is up at the end of the year, and his "at-large" seat is up for election on Nov. 2 anyway. The council likely will declare the seat vacant at the next meeting Sept.14, at which time a replacement could be appointed or the seat can remain vacant until the new members are sworn in – typically in December. There is only one candidate for that position.

Other mayoral candidates included a new name, Drew Hilde, but the signed petition he turned in was found to be insufficient, City Clerk Silvia Huffman said. He had until Aug. 27 to cure it, but that did not occur, Huffman said, so he will not appear on the ballot.

That leaves two candidates for mayor: council members Detra Duncan and Sharon Thompson.

Council candidates are:

Ward 1 (one seat): Gordon Rick and Christopher Curl

Ward 3 (one seat): Cory Applegate and Marcia Gieck

At-Large (one seat): Fredrick Hinton

Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8

FFC8 has three vacancies for its Board of Education – two for four years, and one for two years. The two-year term is the position of former director Tom Downing, who resigned earlier this year part-way into his term when he moved to a home out of the district. At that time, Kenneth Coffee Jr. was appointed to the position on an interim basis until the election.

The following candidates submitted petitions by the Aug. 27 deadline:

Kenneth Coffee Jr.

Rose Terrell

Michelle Massaro (incumbent)

Shirley Martinez

Widefield School District 3

Karin Hill

Fountain City Council Member Greg Lauer announces his resignation at the Aug. 24 council meeting as Tamara Estes looks on. Lauer also dropped out of the mayoral race.

WSD3 has three vacancies for its Board of Education, all for four years. The following candidates will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot:

David Dock

Gregory Fisher

Dolly Handel

Maria Dale Peterson-Henderson

Susan Waller-Graham (incumbent)

Donna Walsh

WSD3 also reported notice of two write-in candidates:

Brenda S. Miller

Yevgeniya Tsyganok
