The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is now accepting entries for its 2021-22 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship competitions, as well as the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $30,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Dedicated to encouraging a better understanding and appreciation of America, the VFW’s Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay competitions help foster patriotism among today’s youth. These popular contests also promote friendly competition and rewards success in the form of more than $3 million in combined scholarships at the local, state and national levels. All student entries must be submitted to a sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight, Oct. 31, 2021.

The Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition, with the 2021-22 year’s theme of “America: Where Do We Go From Here?” is open to all students in grades 9-12. Each state winner competes at the national level where the national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000.

The 2021-22 Patriot’s Pen is open to eligible students in grades 6-8. This year’s theme is “How Can I Be a Good American?” The National level winner receives $5,000.

Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award Program

Each year, the VFW presents an elementary, middle and high school teacher with its Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award to recognize them for their outstanding commitment to teach and promote America’s history, traditions and citizenship.

Submit your candidate, and the VFW Posts will submit the top local candidate in each category to CO (state) Department, which then selects a candidate from each category to submit to VFW National Headquarters. The national Department winners in each grade category will receive a VFW National citation for both themselves, and their school.

All current certified/licensed teachers in grades K-12 who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism are prime candidates for this award. From planning field trips to city hall and organizing community volunteer projects, to inviting veterans into the classroom to discuss their military experiences and teachers who foster the development of democratic values and beliefs through unique projects, if you know of such a teacher nominate them today.

Nominations must be submitted to a local VFW Post by Oct. 31. For additional information about the program, please visit the website at vfw.org/TeacheroftheYear.
