Mathias and Barbara met in Illinois and married in 1859. He was 29 years old and she was 19. Both were born in Germany, their families immigrating to America from different locations and at different times. Barbara was the granddaughter of Franz Gruber, who wrote the Christmas carol "Silent Night."
