First responders clear out the intersection of Fountain Mesa Road and Caballero and Fortman avenues Monday afternoon following an incident. The county is preparing to install a roundabout here.

Now that El Paso County has selected a contractor to begin work on the new roundabout at Fountain Mesa Road and Caballero/Fortman avenues, the public is invited to an open house for more details about the upcoming project.

An in-person open house will be held 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Janitell Junior High (7635 Fountain Mesa Road, in the main hallway).

A virtual option is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 1, from 5-6 p.m. Register for the Virtual Meeting by emailing your name and email address to [email protected]

The meeting link will be emailed on Monday morning, Nov. 1.

Event organizers say these public open houses are the community's opportunity to learn about the project and ask questions of the contractor and the project team.

The El Paso County project claims to improve traffic management and safety at the intersection of Fountain Mesa Road and Caballero/Fortman avenues. The recommended new intersection roundabout also includes pedestrian crossing areas, drainage, lighting and restriping of Fountain Mesa Road north of the intersection to Fontaine Boulevard as one lane in each direction with a center left-turn lane and outside shoulders.

Construction will begin in early November and should be complete in late 2022.

According to project officials, "Studies and analysis of the intersection and improvement options indicate that a roundabout design at the intersection of Fountain Mesa Road and Caballero/Fortman Avenue is the optimal design for meeting the projects goals that are intended to:

make the road safer for both vehicle traffic and pedestrians;

slow traffic;

reduce accidents; and

result in the least impact to adjacent properties."

El Paso County advertised and selected Kiewit Construction Company to begin construction in early November. The traveling public can expect to see construction activities at that time.
