A Widefield High School senior tragically died on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in an early morning car crash along Marksheffel Road.

The WSD3 community now mourns the passing of 18-year-old Mary Abiera-Lumbres.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students,” said Sam Briggs, WSD3 director of communications. “A young person's death is always tragic and a sudden loss like this will undoubtedly have a profound effect on our school community. Our crisis response team is available for any staff or students who may need or want help surrounding this loss. We understand everyone deals with grief differently, and we encourage families to talk to their child and to reach out to the school for assistance as needed.”

The Widefield Football Booster Club stated on its Facebook page that Lumbres was “actively involved at the school in many clubs, academic organizations, choir and was a member of the Colorguard/band. Mary will be missed by all who knew her. There are no words for a loss of this magnitude and we send our thoughts and prayers to her family, friends, and all who knew her.”

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that the crash occurred at 6:57 a.m. Lumbres was driving a Toyota Prius and began making a left turn onto Marksheffel when a Ford pickup truck hit the Toyota. Lumbres died at the scene, while the other driver did not experience any injuries. As of Nov. 4, CSPD has not made any further statement about the cause of the crash and is awaiting further details from the coroner’s report.
