Wag of the Week

Does anyone still make New Year's resolutions? Who is that brave, idealistic, or even a little bit silly? But it would be great if someone out there would resolve to open his or her home to a needy dog, and make at least fifteen New Year's resolutions at once – caring for the pup for the duration of his or her life. So....here is Winston, one of 5 litter-mates who came in recently and the only one still not claimed for fostering or adopting. Just look at that face! – an old soul, to be sure – wise beyond his years, but of course, a bit concerned that he's still unclaimed. He was born Oct. 24. He's playful and confident and, of course, adorable, or, as I like to say, precioso. There looks to be some hound and Shepherd in his litter. We're guessing he'll weigh about 45 pounds when grown.

It takes SO much work to run and work for a rescue – so this is a shout-out to Cathy Davies Blake, who travels far distances – in state (for instance, to Lamar) and out of state – to Texas or New Mexico, for instance, to take in dogs who are not finding homes where they are. Colorado has a better adoption rate. It's not just the travel that's daunting and difficult, but the care the animals receive once here. They are not always well; in fact, rarely, some are very unwell, but this is not known – rescue involves a lot of networking, and humans aren't perfect. Be assured that AARF treats them fully before finding them homes. They also get vaccinated, spayed/neutered/chipped. Cathy will often board in her own home, while running them to the vet and back, and going to Tumbleweed and back where other AARF dogs are boarded. She is really 24/7 when it comes to dog welfare, simultaneously caring for her own pack of – I forget how many! Thus, she is now one of my all-time heroes. At left you can see two puppies in process of healing, snuggling with Cathy's own dog Abby, who is likewise heroic!

Four more adult dogs are coming in this Wednesday, so stay tuned. Also, AARF holds adoption fairs at Petsmart on Powers Saturdays 11-2: 2965 N New Center Pt., Colorado Springs, CO 80922. More info: Julie at 375-1200 (land line) or Cathy at 761-5320. Email: [email protected] or [email protected] Facebook: AARF Colorado; website: aarfcolorado.com If you have adopted one of our dogs, and have a success story to share, please do: write [email protected] And Happy New Year – stay safe, healthy, and of course, covered in fur and good slobber!
