Sproul students injured in accident

A few students were injured by a vehicle early Thursday morning as people were arriving to Sproul Junior High in Security. They were transported to a hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

The school sent out a notification to families alerting them about the incident, but some loved ones -- without specific confirmation to the contrary -- were worried whether their students were among the injured.

One mother said she had been emailing her daughter to verify she was OK, but it took a while for her to get a response.

"She hasn't replied," the mother said. "Surely they'd get a hold of me if it was my kid. Still makes one uneasy."

The district verified that families of the involved students were the first to know.

"Yes, the parents of the students were notified immediately," said Sam Briggs, WSD3 Director of Communications.

The school sent the following message to all Sproul families:

"There was a car accident involving students outside of the school this morning. The students involved were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Several students were coming to the school at the time and may have witnessed it. Our counselors and social worker are always available to support any student in need. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident."

Some reports have stated that the driver of the vehicle was treated for "medical issues."
