Mesa Ridge High School senior Josette Ford was recognized by the Cheyenne Mountain VFW Post 3917 at the Widefield School District 3 Board of Education meeting Jan. 20 for her Voices of Democracy audio-essay.

The audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. This year's theme is "Where Do We Go from Here."

Josette's essay focused on how government authority was exerted and expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as influences of social media, "fake news," and issues in America's political system leading to division. One of the challenges she discussed was how to better represent the needs of the people. "We need more political leaders who can truly relate to the people they are governing," she said.

Josette was one of five students who submitted an audio essay from her school. She was given a certificate and gift card by the VFW's Jeff and Holly Buchwalter at the Board of Education meeting. You can listen to Josette read her essay at https://www.wsd3.org/district-news.
