Fort Carson's own Maura Spence Carroll, who was crowned Miss Colorado in 2021 and recently competed in the Miss America competition, visited the Fountain City Council on Feb. 8 to share about her platform of suicide prevention, mental health reform, and positive body image. As an active duty Army soldier, Carroll said she relates to the mental health issues specific to military personnel and veterans, as well as issues such as bulimia - which she experienced extensively in her youth. "I've been there," she said. "I've been in that dark place." Her overarching theme to those listening was the advice to be friendly and provide a listening ear to those around them, as we never know what struggles people are going through. "Be a friend," she said. "Be a neighbor. Check on people. ... Reach out to people."
