Purple Heart chapter hosts George Washington birthday banquet

Gen. George Washington authorized the wearing of a purple ribbon, which became known as the Badge of Military Merit, on the lapels of soldiers who had been wounded in action or by other meritorious actions in combat on Aug. 7, 1782, at Newburgh, New York. This act is considered the origin of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
