The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 423 in Fountain held its annual George Washington Birthday Banquet on Feb. 12. Pictured at the luncheon are Senator Dennis Hisey and his wife Kathy; State House Representative Mary Bradford; and Fountain Mayor Sharon Thompson.
Gen. George Washington authorized the wearing of a purple ribbon, which became known as the Badge of Military Merit, on the lapels of soldiers who had been wounded in action or by other meritorious actions in combat on Aug. 7, 1782, at Newburgh, New York. This act is considered the origin of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
